Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find a list of complete and very practical answers. Don’t forget, our experts are best placed to answer your questions.

When can my child enroll in driver education?

14yrs-9 months is the best time for a student to start a driver’s education course but a student can enroll any time around the age of 15. A completed course will prepare the student for the written skills test taken at the Department of Motor Vehicles or at Hill Driving School. We encourage early enrollment so students are aware of the rules of the road and understand the skills they need before they go out on the road.

What is the cost of the driver education program?

The fee for driver education varies based on the type of course you choose. As a reminder, all teens in the state of Wisconsin under the age of 18 are required to take both eLearning and behind-the-wheel to obtain a driver’s license.  Choosing a driver education program is a critical decision. This will affect your child’s driving skills for a lifetime. A driver education course is an investment in your child’s life skills. At MJM Hill Driving School, you will get a quality education program, new and safe cars to drive and highly trained instructors who are concerned about the results of our driver education program. We have set our prices based on industry standards around us in southern Wisconsin. One could say our prices are a little higher than a prom dress but a lot less than a class ring.

How does the eLearning only program work?

At any time a student can start the eLearning driver training. Students will be allowed to complete 2-one hour lessons of e-learning per day. Each student will be given 90 days to complete the e-learning course. After each lesson, there will be a short test the student must pass to go on to the next lesson. At the end of the eLearning program, students will have a choice to enroll in behind-the-wheel with MJM Hill Driving School or be mailed a completion certificate to take to another driving school to complete the behind-the-wheel portion.

How long does a driver education course last?

Courses are required to cover 30 hours of classroom instruction. This will be an online format that will include text, videos, and simulations. The program is designed at a 5th-grade reading level to accommodate many different learning abilities. Students get 90 days to complete the eLearning portion.  Behind-the-wheel time varies depending on age.  Permits need to be held for a minimum of 6 months regardless of age.

Can a student drive with a parent/guardian before working with an instructor?

A student is eligible to drive as soon as they get their learner’s permit. They are not required to drive first with an instructor before driving with a parent/guardian. However, the law requires a student to have a driving or observation time scheduled with the licensed instructor within 60 days of getting the learner’s permit. At MJM Hill Driving School we encourage teens to schedule within 30 days if possible.

What is a Classroom e-Learning course?

The Classroom e-Learning course is going to be a great combination of attending an instructor lead classroom for critical topics such as Graduated Licensing laws, Right of Way laws, the Drivers Point System as it relates to tickets, Peer Pressure, Texting and Cell Use while driving, what to do in case of an accident, and sharing the roadway with others for 10 hours. The balance will be taught on-line with reading text, videos, discussion questions and quizzes. An instructor lead course will be held for 2 hours a day for 5 days straight. The balance of the classroom hours will be provided on-line. It is a great option in contrast to meeting for 2 hours per week for the entire 3 months of summer. This makes room for sports camps, family vacations, 4H fairs, church mission trips and camps. Our hope is to be in the local Green County schools for their summer programs, holding the 5 days of courses in your local school or a school near you to down on students missing classes. By holding a classroom in your local school or a school closer to your local school, it will make it all the more convenient for students to get to courses. Classroom courses during the school year will be held on Monday nights from 6:30-8:30 pm for 5 Monday nights in a row. We will also offer this same program on Saturday mornings from 9:00 – 11:00 am

When does the Behind-the-Wheel driving start?

The law requires Behind-the-Wheel training will start within 60 days of the student getting a learner’s permit. MJM Hill Driving School currently has 7 instructors servicing 22 schools.  On any given month we are servicing up to 350 students for behind-the-wheel. Driving is scheduled Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.

Why only one driving lesson a month?

We are trying to get everyone their drive time and get done in a timely manner.  With the closings of 2 driving schools in southwest Wisconsin and high schools offering online lessons but not behind the wheel, there is a large number of students enrolling in our behind-the-wheel program.   This is why we are not allowing students to complete 2 lessons in a month unless the driving school schedules it for you.

How often do I schedule a drive time?

This depends on your age; everyone has to complete 6 hrs driving & 6hrs observation.  How often is listed below:

At 15 ½ and older you need to schedule one(1) lesson a month.  The first lesson needs to be within 45 to 55 days of your permit issuance date.   You have to hold your permit for a minimum of 6 months regardless of your age.  Your permit is good for 18 months.

At 15 to 15 ½   you need to schedule your first lesson within 45 to 60 days of your permit issuance date.  The remaining 5 lessons need to be spread out over the remaining months until you turn 16.  Only one(1) lesson a month!  Your permit is good for 18 months.

What are the typical drive times?

Drive times vary based on day-light savings time.  Spring, Summer and Fall all sessions will be from 8:30-10:30am, 10:30-12:30pm, and 1:00-3:00pm.  Winter hours are from 9:00-11:00am, 11:00-1:00pm and 1:30-3:30pm.

IN THE WINTER:  we start later because we have students coming from over and hour away. This allows for the roads to get a little cleaner for the safety of those traveling a distance to get here. The reason for not driving students in the dark is because it is impossible to teach skills when light is limited.

LESSONS AFTER: 3:00pm or 3:30pm.  If there is an need for a student to drive outside of the lesson time frame, we may make an exception but it is rare.

Additional – at the end of the day, instructors need to document their driving lesson with each student.  Instructors, just like school teachers, need time for the state paperwork that needs to be done on a daily basis so they are often in the office for an hour after their student driving lessons are done.

Do you drive nights and weekends?

No. Our driving hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 to 4 pm. We have been teaching for 25 plus years and we have found these hours are optimal learning hours for all teens. This learning is critical and now with 91% of teens taking the waiver on the DOT driving test, we want to make sure they are in a learning state. On occasion, we will have some Saturday appointments but not regularly as we need to leave Saturdays open so if any instructor needs a personal or sick day off or, during the winter months, occasionally drives are canceled due to snow or ice. Having the Saturdays open allows us to move those drivers to an open Saturday. As for nights – it is impossible for an instructor to address the things the student needs to learn and practice in the dark. So although we drive later in the spring and summer month, once daylight savings is here, we don’t drive past 4 pm

Can I schedule all 6 lessons right away?

No.  We schedule out 6 to 8 weeks.  Every student is given a target date to finish.  This is a TARGET DATE ONLY.  It does not mean you have to be finished by then.  Each month we run a target date report to see how many driving lessons we need to put out each month based on student target dates.  This is why it is important to schedule your appointments on a timely basis.  As for nights – it is impossible for an instructor to address the things the student needs to learn and practice in the dark. So although we drive later in the spring and summer month, once daylight savings is here, we don’t drive past 4 pm

Can I drive with a friend?

Yes. When you go to schedule your driving lesson, look for a time that has 2 slots open.  This means no one had signed into that time slot so you both need to register at the same time to get both slots together.

What is needed to get a driver’s licenses?

Completion of a 30 hour certified driver education course and 6 hours of driving and 6 hours of observation with a certified driver education instructor. A completion certificate will be issued to the DMV upon the last driving session and a copy will be emailed to the parent.

Is the Waiver still available or do I have to schedule a driving test?

Yes. The waiver is still available to students under 18 years of age; completing the waiver paper is up to the parents, we do not control that.  Parents can always schedule their teen a driving skills test from our website under the tab SCHEDULE.

How to schedule the road skills test for a driver’s license?

If the student is successful at passing the driving skills test, they will be issued a probationary license. There will be a fee of $45.00 for this license. You can schedule this test by clicking on “Schedule a Road Test” on our home page or you can schedule your road test at
https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/online-srvcs/sch-road-test/schedule.aspx

When can a road skills test be scheduled?

A road skills test can be scheduled 10 weeks in advance of the student eligibility date. This eligibility date is determined by the issue date of the learners permit. A student is not eligible to take the driving skills test until he/she has had the learners permit for a minimum of 6 months from the issue date, regardless of the student’s age.
